Sex and the Sickbed Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Sex and the Sickbed - Essay Example Demise is one such inclination that isn't effortlessly managed by people under differential conditions. The story ââ¬ËSex and the Sickbedââ¬â¢ additionally makes reference to a similar belief system of an accomplice missing out to anotherââ¬â¢s sexual necessities and in this way passing on rashly. This is an extremely lamentable act which has occurred for all an inappropriate reasons, most definitely. The story is accordingly a delineation of how an individual addresses the most critical difficulties of his life. This has been expressed inside the story itself where Jennifer needed to experience torment on the grounds that Neil had kicked the bucket and in this way she had lost her as an accomplice. What Jennifer missed about Neil the most was that they would not have the option to make the most of their sexual coexistence later on which was a wellspring of bliss for them two. In any case, this won't do the trick in the coming occasions as death has won for the couple and th ey have gone separate ways through regular methods. The case with human life is the same. One of the most disadvantageous parts of human life is that it needs to reach a conclusion out of the blue. This has been demonstrated with the coming of time as individuals bite the dust once in a while, and consequently their lives get done with others having dear expectations from them. There is a desperate need to discover how these difficulties can be tended to with the evolving times (Rosenthal, 2009, 61). This is on the grounds that the difficulties change and thus the necessities modify also. Notwithstanding, demise is one critical imprint that leaves a great deal to be wanted of most definitely. One must understand the genuine significance of death before remarking on it, and all the more so inside the narrative of ââ¬Å"Sex and the Sickbedâ⬠. The story gives a genuine image of how Jennifer would need to manage Neilââ¬â¢s inconvenient demise and what the outcomes would be in t he long range plan of things. Neil left a permanent blemish on the brain of Jennifer who can't manage it and thinks about the sexual coexistence that they shared. With this, one effectively sees that it is so confused to manage with lifeââ¬â¢s shifted edifices and difficulties that come about from time to time. Organizing them as the most significant among the few ones is a laborious errand, and all the more so when the conversation is fixated on the story ââ¬Å"Sex and the Sickbedâ⬠. This is on the grounds that for Jennifer, Neilââ¬â¢s passing is something that comes out as a genuine and grave issue which will stay with her whole until the time she is alive. In addition to the fact that she is missing Neil, she would need to miss the sexual coexistence that they shared also. These are troubling occasions for Jennifer and she should grapple with the equivalent, the sooner the better for her own self (Author Unknown, 2007). The difficulties continue expanding as the oblig ation increments upon oneââ¬â¢s own self. Be that as it may, there are various ramifications for the individuals under shifted conditions as has been demonstrated valid in the story ââ¬Å"Sex and the Sickbedâ⬠itself. In this manner what is required currently is a perceptual change in understanding that things should be understood well before they are viewed as being troublesome or complex in sum. This will comprehend various issues and concerns which have been hitting not too far off, and all the more so inside the lives of the individuals in the occasions a lot of like today. At long last, it is sound to express that the story gets the job done perfectly. This is on the grounds that individuals feel that the most perplexing issues could be learned if just the gravity of the entanglement is discovered. This happens through a comprehension about the highlights which hurt the most and which will make turmoil for all an inappropriate reasons. The story is likewise critical to the extent appreciating how the issues could be handled, if and just if there is an aggregate comprehension to achieve goals for sacredness in this world. All

American Federalism Essay Example For Students
American Federalism Essay Federalism, by definition, is the division of government authority between at any rate two degrees of government. In the United States, authority is separated between the state and national government. Promoters of a solid administrative framework accept that the state and neighborhood governments don't have the modernity to manage the serious issues confronting the nation (Encarta.com). Indeed, even before the Constitution was endorsed, solid contention were made by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison in the Federalist Papers asking the incorporation of a bureaucratic type of government to supplant the bombed confederation. In Federalist Paper No. 9 Hamilton expresses, This type of government is a show by which a few littler states consent to become individuals from a huge one, which they expect to shape. It is s sort of collection of social orders that comprises another one, fit for expanding, by methods for new relationship, until they show up to such an extent of intensity as to have the option to accommodate the security of a unified body (Usinfo.state.gov). The individuals of the United States required a focal government that was fit for holding certain controls over the states. The individuals who expected that the government would turn out to be too solid were guaranteed by Madison in Federalist No. 14 that in any case it is to be recollected that the general government isn't to be accused of the entire intensity of making and administrating lawsThe subordinate governments, which can stretch out their consideration to each one of those different items which can be independently accommodated, will hold their due power and movement (Usinfo.state.gov). The vital and appropriate statement was remembered for the Constitution to consider a functioning and amazing government. It is otherwise called the Elastic Clause and essentially expressed that the national government had the capacity to pass any law that was vital and appropriate to complete national business. John Marshall extended the understanding of the essential and legitimate for the most part through the Supreme Court choice in McCulloch v. Maryland. His choice that a state couldn't burden an office of the national government was not by any means the only result of the legal dispute. Marshall accepted the open door to state that despite the fact that it isn't referenced in the Constitution, the national government has the option to sanction a national bank (Usinfo.state.gov). The main time of federalism is double federalism. Double federalism is the conviction that having discrete and similarly ground-breaking levels of government is the best course of action. One significant pioneer during this time was Roger B. Tanney, who was the leader of the Supreme Court. During this period, there was warmed political discussion on the issue of servitude. The Dred Scott v. Sanford choice in 1857, this was the primary choice to remove powers from the national government. During this time, the Civil War happened (Nvcc.com). After the Civil War, with the section of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments became wellsprings of intensity for the national government when it went to its ward over the states. By passing laws against bondage and permitting equivalent assurance under the law, the national government enabled itself to implement those laws and along these lines upgraded authority over the states. The Thirteenth Amendment annulled servitude and in Section 2 expressed that Congress will have the ability to uphold this article by fitting enactment. By adding Section 2 to the change, Congress was just guaranteeing their matchless quality over the state governments. In addition to other things, the Fourteenth Amendment ensures equivalent security under the law to all residents. Since all residents are ensured assurance, it is surrendered over to the national government to ensure all residents are getting these rights. Despite the fact that many idea that the Fourteenth Amendment implied that the Bill of Rights was nationalized, its understanding by the Supreme Court was very different. Similarly as in the Thirteenth Amendment, the Fourteenth in Section 5 is enabled to implement the article. The Fifteenth Amendment gave the option to cast a ballot to previous slaves and says that the option to cast a ballot can't be prevented on account from securing race, shading, or past condition or subjugation. .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f , .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .postImageUrl , .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .focused content territory { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f , .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f:hover , .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f:visited , .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f:active { border:0!important; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; murkiness: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-change: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f:active , .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f:hover { mistiness: 1; progress: darkness 250ms; webkit-change: haziness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content embellishment: underline; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; text style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; outskirt span: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-fringe sweep: 3px; content adjust: focus; content enhancement: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u3237 bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u3237bf10b975c2fcf653bceff2302a4f:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Unemployment levels Essay Just as in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth, the Fifteenth Amendment takes into consideration requirement of the law by Congress (Nvcc.edu). How Schema-Focused Therapy Works for BPD
How Schema-Focused Therapy Works for BPD BPD Treatment Print How Schema-Focused Therapy Works for BPD By Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, PhD Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and associate professor of psychology at Eastern Connecticut State University. The therapy includes some elements that are traditional parts of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) but also includes some elements of other types of psychotherapy.?? Childhood Needs and Maladaptive Schemas The theory underlying schema-focused therapy presumes that when our basic childhood needs (such as needs for safety, acceptance, and love) are met inadequately, we develop unhealthy ways of interpreting and interacting with the world, which is called maladaptive early schemas. Schemas are broad and pervasive patterns of thinking and behavior. These are more than just beliefs; schemas are deeply held patterns that are closely related to our sense of self and view of the world. Schema theory proposes that schemas are triggered when events happening in our current life resemble those from our past that were related to the formation of the schema. If we have developed unhealthy schemas because of difficult experiences in our childhood, we will resort to unhealthy ways of thinking and behave in response to this new situation. Schema theory proposes that many of the symptoms of BPD are caused by difficult childhood experiences (such as maltreatment or early separation from caregivers), which lead to the formation of maladaptive early schemas.?? Examples In order to understand how schema therapy works, it is helpful to look at some of the unhealthy early schemas people may have and the issues they may later cause. A few examples of maladaptive schemas include:?? Defectiveness / Shame: People who believe that they are fundamentally unloveable may sabotage their relationships because they are afraid of being abandoned. Emotional Deprivation: People who believe that other people will not meet their needs may end up in relationships with people who are emotionally neglectful.Social Isolation: People who hold a schema that they are separate or unaccepted in the world may isolate themselves from others.Enmeshment: People who hold a schema that they cannot be happy or successful without the support of other people, often family members, may become overly dependent on their loved ones. They may lack a sense of direction, autonomy, and individuality. Not everyone responds to early schemas in the same ways. Schema therapy suggests that there are three primary coping styles that people use to deal with these beliefs.?? Surrender causes people to engage in behaviors that reinforce their existing beliefs.Avoidance leads people to try to avoid any situation that triggers feelings of fear or vulnerability.Overcompensation involves engaging in behaviors that act in opposition to the belief, often to an extreme degree. Goals The initial goals of schema-focused therapy for borderline personality disorder are to identify the patientâs relevant schemas and to link these schemas to past events and current symptoms.?? Following this initial work, the therapist and patient then work on ways of processing emotions related to the schemas and altering unhealthy coping styles that are the result of maladaptive schemas (unhealthy schemas that could be causing symptoms in BPD).?? For example, the therapist and client may conduct exercises focused on venting anger, breaking unhealthy patterns of behavior, and changing unhelpful ways of thinking. Research Support While there has not yet been extensive research on schema-focused therapy, one study has been published to date which suggests that patients randomly assigned to receive schema-focused therapy had significantly larger reductions in borderline personality disorder symptoms than those assigned to receive psychodynamic therapy.?? While this is preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of schema-focused therapy, it suggests that this therapy shows promise in treating BPD. In addition, an analysis of multiple research studies on psychological therapy for borderline personality disorder also concluded that schema-focused therapy appears effective, but the authors also said more research is needed. How to Find a Schema Therapist Finding a qualified professional who has experience with schema therapy can be a challenge, but there are resources that can help. You might start by looking for therapists in your area who specialize in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Because schema therapy uses many of the same techniques as CBT, these therapists may also have experience with both approaches. The International Society of Schema Therapy also provides a directory of therapists, or you can utilize the American Psychological Associations therapist finder to look for providers in your area. Youtube became on of the fastest growing websites and even outpaced Myspace at this. Its business model is an advertising based revenue model where users clicking on ads are the source of revenue. This was an innovative idea and developed by the three youngsters with Chad Hurley being the Chief Executive Office and Steven Chen being the chief technology officer. Hurley, Chen and Karim got their start in the business world during the dot-com bubble and the bust that followed. Their venture money came in part through their connection to Roelof Botha, the South African former PayPal CFO. YouTube was born when the founders wanted to share some videos from a dinner party with friends in San Francisco. Sending the clips around by e-mail was not possible because they kept bouncing for being too big. Posting videos online wasnââ¬â¢t feasible either as no website allowed it. In 11 months the site became one of the most popular on the Internet because the founders designed it so people can post almost anything they like on YouTube in minutes. Steve Chen grew up in Taiwan until the age of 15, when his family immigrated to the United States. He attended high school at John Hersey High School as well as the Illinois Math and Science Academy and college from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In June 2006, Chen was named by Business 2.0 as one of the ââ¬Å"The 50 people who matter nowâ⬠in business. Hence the person to look out for would be Steve Chen. Karim had a lesser role as he developed the website but was an advisor by the end. Their dreams were realized when Google bought Youtube for a whooping $1.6 Billion and made them the modern entrepreneurs of today. Technology: Fecebook Description: English social networking website. Popularity: Close to 8 million hits per day. The site was founded as Thefacebook in February 2004 by college sophomore Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University with technical support from Andrew McCollum and financial support from Eduardo Saverin. The site was founded as Thefacebook in February 2004 by college sophomore Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University with technical support from Andrew McCollum and financial support from Eduardo Saverin. Zuckenberg was not a new player in the field however. In 2003, Zuckerberg and friend Adam Dââ¬â¢Angelo launched the Synapse Media Player. The player received high acclaim in its ability to predict songs to play based on the userââ¬â¢s previous selections. Several software companies, including Microsoft, expressed interest in the player, though no formal deal was made. This is similar to the way Bill Gates was in his younger years; attaining acclaim as an avid programmer and being noticed by firms like IBM. Hence, it can be safely said that people like Steve Chen and Mark Zuckerberg are the modern day equivalent of Bill Gates and Steve jobs. They might not be as exceptional nor are their innovations as far reaching as Windows or iPod, they still are the current knights of the technological era and have done what their predecessors did before them; create something exceptionally unique with the ability to influence people internationally. Eriksons Stages of Psychosocial Development free essay sample
Intimacy vs. Isolation (young adulthood) Occurring in Young adulthood, we begin to share ourselves more intimately with others. We explore relationships leading toward longer term commitments with someone other than a family member. Successful completion can lead to comfortable relationships and a sense of commitment, safety, and care within a relationship. Avoiding intimacy, fearing commitment and relationships can lead to isolation, loneliness, and sometimes depression. Ego Development Outcome: Intimacy and Solidarity vs. Isolation Basic Strengths: Affiliation and Love In the initial stage of being an adult we seek one or more companions and love. As we try to find mutually satisfying relationships, primarily through marriage and friends, we generally also begin to start a family, though this age has been pushed back for many couples who today dont start their families until their late thirties. If negotiating this stage is successful, we can experience intimacy on a deep level. If were not successful, isolation and distance from others may occur. And when we dont find it easy to create satisfying relationships, our world can begin to shrink as, in defense, we can feel superior to others. Our significant relationships are with marital partners and friends. The second crisis, occurring between late adolescence and early adulthood, is called the crisis of intimacy versus isolation. This crisis represents the struggle to resolve the reciprocal nature of intimacy; i. e. , to achieve a mutual balance between giving love and support, and receiving love and support. Thus, youth must determine how to develop and to maintain close friendships outside the family, as well as how to achieve reciprocity in romantic relationships. Erikson believed that when youth successfully navigate this crisis they emerge with the ability to form honest, reciprocal relationships with others and have the capacity to bond with others to achieve common goals (e. g. , marriage). When youth fail to navigate this crisis successfully, they can become distant and self-contained; or conversely, they can become needy, dependent, and vulnerable. If youth do not resolve this crisis, their emotional development becomes stalled, and as a result, they will remain isolated and lonely without social supports. Identity Moratorium ââ¬â the status in which the adolescent is currently in a crisis, exploring various commitments and is ready to make choices, but has not made a commitment to these choices yet. The third identity status is called moratorium. This identity status represents high degree of exploration but a low degree of commitment. At this status, youth are in the midst of an identity crisis which has prompted them to explore and experiment with different values, beliefs, and goals. However, they have not made any final decisions about which beliefs and values are most important to them, and which principles should guide their lives. Thus, they are not yet committed to a particular identity. They are keeping their options open. For example, Tim, 14, may suddenly begin to argue with his parents about going to the Sunday worship service at the Methodist Christian Church, even though he has attended this service with his family since childhood. Instead, he likes to spend his timing reading about all the different world religions and plans to visit several mosques, temples, and churches around the area to see what their worship services are like. Or, he may question the logic of religion altogether, and he may even wonder whether God exists at all. It is clear that Tim is not quite certain what he believes yet, but he is actively exploring and considering what values, principles, and beliefs he wants to live by. Identity Moratorium ââ¬â adolescent has acquired vague or ill-formed ideological and occupational commitments; he/she is still undergoing the identity search (crisis). They are beginning to commit to an identity but are still developing it. Jerry Erikson emphasized the role of culture and society and the conflicts that can take place within the ego itself. Eriksonââ¬â¢s Theory of Psychosocial Development has eight distinct stages, each with two possible outcomes. According to the theory, successful completion of each stage results in a healthy personality and successful interactions with others. While failure to successfully complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to complete further stages, which can lead to a more unhealthy personality and sense of self. These stages, however, can be resolved successfully at a later time. Since adulthood covers a span of many years, Erikson divided the stages of adulthood into the experiences of young adults, middle aged adults and older adults. While the actual ages may vary considerably from one stage to another, the ages seem to be appropriate for the majority of people. Generativity vs. Stagnation (middle adulthood) During middle adulthood, we establish our careers, settle down within a relationship, begin our own families and develop a sense of being a part of the bigger picture. We give back to society through raising our children, being productive at work, and becoming involved in community activities and organizations. By failing to achieve these objectives, we become stagnant and feel unproductive. Ego Development Outcome: Generativity vs. Self absorption or Stagnation Basic Strengths: Production and Care Now work is most crucial. Erikson observed that middle-age is when we tend to be occupied with creative and meaningful work and with issues surrounding our family. Also, middle adulthood is when we can expect to be in charge, the role weve longer envied. The significant task is to perpetuate culture and transmit values of the culture through the family (taming the kids) and working to establish a stable environment. Strength comes through care of others and production of something that contributes to the betterment of society, which Erikson calls generativity, so when were in this stage we often fear inactivity and meaninglessness. As our children leave home, or our relationships or goals change, we may be faced with major life changes ââ¬â the mid-life crisis ââ¬â and struggle with finding new meanings and purposes. If we dont get through this stage successfully, we can become self-absorbed and stagnate. Significant relationships are within the workplace, the community and the family. Refining and extending Erik Eriksonââ¬â¢s work, James Marcia came up with four Identity Statuses of psychological identity development. The main idea is that oneââ¬â¢s sense of identity is determined largely by the choices and commitments made regarding certain personal and social traits. Based on Erik Eriksonââ¬â¢s groundbreaking work on identity and psychosocial development in the 1960s, Canadian developmental psychologist James Marcia refined and extended Eriksonââ¬â¢s model, primarily focusing on adolescent development. Addressing Eriksonââ¬â¢s notion of identity crisis, Marcia posited that the adolescent stage consists neither of identity resolution nor identity confusion, but rather the degree to which one has explored and committed to an identity in a variety of life domains from vocation, religion, relational choices, gender roles, and so on. Marciaââ¬â¢s theory of identity achievement argues that two distinct parts form an adolescentââ¬â¢s identity: crisis (i. e. a time when oneââ¬â¢s values and choices are being reevaluated) and commitment. He defined a crisis as a time of upheaval where old values or choices are being reexamined. The end outcome of a crisis leads to a commitment made to a certain role or value. James Marcia expanded on Eriksons work and divided the identity crisis into four states. These are not stages, but rather processes that adolescents go through. All adolescents will occupy one or more of these states, at least temporarily. But, because these are not stages, people do not progress from one step to the next in a fixed sequence, nor must everyone go through each and every state. Each state is determined by two factors: 1. Is the adolescent committed to an identity, and 2. Is the individual searching for their true identity? Identity Diffusion ââ¬â the status in which the adolescent does not have a sense of having choices; he or she has not yet made (nor is attempting/willing to make) a commitment. The core idea is that oneââ¬â¢s sense of identity is determined largely by the hoices and commitments made regarding certain personal and social traits. The work done in this paradigm considers how much one has made certain choices, and how much he or she displays a commitment to those choices. Identity involves the adoption of 1) a sexual orientation, 2) a set of values and ideals and 3) a vocational direction. A well-developed identity gives on a sense of oneââ¬â¢s strengths, weaknesses, and individual uniqueness. A person with a less well-developed identity is not able to define his or her personal strengths and weaknesses, and does not have a well articulated sense of self. The first identity status, identity diffusion, describes youth who have neither explored nor committed to any particular identity. Thus, this identity status represents a low level of exploration and a low level of commitment. These adolescents havent considered their identity at all, and havent established any life goals. They are reactive, passively floating through life and dealing with each situation as it arises. Their primary motivation is hedonic; the avoidance of discomfort and the acquisition of pleasure. By way of illustration, consider the example of Tyler, who stumbled his way through high school and graduated last year (but just barely). Tyler still doesnt know what he wants to do with his life. In fact, he hasnt really given much thought at all to what hed like to accomplish. He hasnt applied to any colleges or technical schools. He still works part-time at the pizza shop; a job he started while in high school so that he could have a little extra spending money. He doesnt earn enough money to live on his own so he lives with his parents, but he doesnt pay them any rent or even pay for his own groceries. Nonetheless, he hasnt even considered applying for a better paying, full-time job. Whenever his frustrated mother asks, What are you doing with your life? he just mutters, I dunno. Tyler hasnt even considered this question, and has no goals or plans of any sort. Diffusion ââ¬â the state of having no clear idea of ones identity and making no attempt to find that identity. These adolescents may have struggled to find their identity, but they never resolved it, and they seem to have stopped trying. There is no commitment and no searching. As mentioned, these four identity statuses describe points along a continuum moving from an initially diffuse, undefined individual identity to a highly specific and well-defined, individual sense of self. Inherent in Marcias theory is the assumption that a mature and well-adjusted person possesses a well-defined and individually determined identity. This assumption reflects an implicit set of values common to many developed Western societies concerning the desirability of an individually defined identity; but, this set of values may not be universally shared. In contemporary Western cultures, there is a great value placed upon individual needs, rights, and freedoms. Therefore it is only natural that such societies would define maturity in terms of a highly evolved sense of an individual self. But some other cultures value the needs of the larger community over any single individual. In such cultures, maturity is defined by the ability to subjugate individual pursuits and desires in the service of the groups greater good.
